As reported by The Scotsman, former Celtic star Simon Donnelly reckons that the Hoops’ gap over Rangers is so great that not a single Gers player would get into Brendan Rodgers’ starting eleven.
What’s the story?
Donnelly knows a thing or two about dominance in Glasgow and how to close the gap, having been a big part of a 90s Celtic side that had to endure season after season of Rangers title wins, before eventually stopping them achieving a significant 10-in-a-row.
Now he reckons that this Celtic side has what it takes to do what no team has done before and that’s go one step beyond the 9-in-a-row benchmark.
As quoted by The Scotsman, Donnelly said:
First of all, Rangers have to at least get back to finishing second. They’ve struggled to do that this season, although Aberdeen have done really well. I don’t see the gap closing any time soon, frankly. There’s not a single Rangers player I could pick who would get into the Celtic team. Weird and wonderful things crop up in sport, which is why we all love it. But right now everything points towards ten in a row for Celtic.
They’re not exactly words Rangers fans want to hear but the former Hoops man, who made close to 200 appearances for Celtic, may have a point when you look at the two teams side-by-side.
The two XIs
The stand out performer for Rangers recently has been Kenny Miller and you wouldn’t exactly fancy dropping the likes of Moussa Dembele to accommodate him in the Celtic frontline.
Across the team the Hoops regulars more than match their Rangers counterparts; Scott Sinclair is far ahead of Barrie McKay, Kieran Tierney is in front of Lee Wallace, Craig Gordon is a better option than Wes Foderingham.
On paper the two teams are certainly miles apart. As we seen recently at Celtic Park though, that doesn’t always transfer itself to the pitch.
Can Pedro Caixinha’s team compete with Celtic at Hampden in the upcoming Scottish Cup semi-final?
