Having lost key attacker Samuel Saiz to Getafe, Leeds United may well be forced into the January transfer market after all, and the club should be considering at a potential deal for Peterborough United attacker Marcus Maddison.
What’s the word, then?
The Whites are currently flying high at the top of the Championship, but losing a player of Saiz’s ability for the second half of the 2018-19 campaign is an issue.
And it would not be a surprise to see the former Premier League club look for a replacement when the January transfer window opens for business.
The likes of Alaves’ Ibai Gomez have been linked with a switch to Elland Road, but Leeds should be looking at a deal for Peterborough’s Maddison.
Maddison was linked with a move to Leeds back in August, but ultimately remained with Peterborough.
The lure of a switch to the Championship leaders might prove difficult to turn down in January though, and the Whites should make a bid.
What would Maddison bring to Leeds?
The 25-year-old managed 12 goals and 23 assists for Peterborough last season, whilst he already has two goals and 10 assists during the 2018-19 campaign.
There is no question that Peterborough will be desperate to keep hold of the playmaker, who is capable of playing in a number of different positions.
However, Maddison’s contract at the London Road Stadium will expire in June 2020, and a sizeable bid in January might well be difficult to turn down.
Maddison has registered 44 goals and 71 assists in 198 appearances for Peterborough since joining the club from Gateshead in 2014.
It might well be time to move on though, and Leeds should make a strong play for the former England C international next month.
